A new study has shown that three relatively similar meals during the day may prevent cognitive decline. The study further emphasized that if the energy intake is inclined towards one meal of the day, while there is no rapid cognitive decline, but it does not benefit cognition.

Earlier research has established that food quality is associated with cardiovascular and metabolic health outcomes. This study, however, focuses on the effect of meal timing on cognitive health. As per WHO statistics, approximately 55 million people across the globe have dementia, with 10 million new cases being diagnosed every year. With an increasing proportion of the aging world population, dementia will affect 78 million people by 2030 and 139 million by 2050.

The study has also shown that skipping breakfast is linked with worse cognitive function and faster cognitive decline. When compared against the uniformly distributed pattern, the breakfast skipping pattern is associated with a cognitive decline of 0.14 cognitive-test points a year.
